Question:

Another swollen kitten stomach question?

I have read other responses about kittens with swollen/bloated stomaches, but none of them really seem to match our situation. Our 7 week old male kitten has seen the vet and had a stool sample taken Tuesday (4 days ago). He is worm free. He's also been neutered by the adoption agency we got him through.

He is a happy kitty, eats, poops, plays, but his stomach is rather swollen/bloated. Is there any other reason aside from worms that would cause this? I was not with my fiance when he took him to the vet so I could not ask. Thanks.

  1. was the wormers from your vets,if not pet stores and shops own brands, especially johnsons wormers do not work, they dont kill the worms they just remain dormant.

If he has been checked for worms and seems otherwise OK, i wouldn't worry about it. It is not uncommon for some cats to develop a large stomach. If there is no pain, and your cat is eating and pooping and acting normally (well, as normal as cats act), it shouldn't be a major concern. If you're still worried about it you can ask the vet next time you are there.

  2. could be giardia, have the vet check since it would not normally show up if the kit was only checked for the major internal parasites

  3. Did the vet say the kitten was healthy.  Some times a bloated belly is not really bloated, but getting chubby.  As long as the f***s is solid, he is urinating as frequently as he is drinking (fresh water only - NO milk), eating and playing.  Then I wouldn't worry, just keep an eye out on any changes, and if any occur - then call the vet immediately.

  4. Since you weren't with your fiance when he took the kitten to the vet, CALL THE VET, and explain your concerns to him.  If he's any kind of vet, he won't mind answering your questions.  Tell him about the "hard" tummy, and the "look" of bloating.  ASK him what could be causing this.

Did the vet check him for internal parasites (Coccidia, etc)?  Or just for worms?..... Ask him......

    Good luck...........

  5. If his belly if bloated and you are concerned about it, you might want to get him x-rayed, just to be safe. He might have something going on with his intestines that shows no other outward sign.
