That is not complicated at all. What they did was simply take multiple pictures, and put them in order. So they took a picture, moved the pieces, took another, moved more pieces, and kept going. Then displayed in order, it appeared to be moving.

It is very detail oriented work, but with time and patience, a simple digital camera can make it work. Think of it as a strobe light, when one sees another moving, it looks similar to that, as they are only seen every so many frames, rather than as a continuous movement. i hope this helped.
