Another water heater question. Size? Professional advice please.?

Last week I asked for advice about whether or not to replace my 17 year old electric water heater ( which is still working). I decided to follow the advice to replace it now before it dies or leaks. I am looking at various brands and models. This is my question. The one we currently have is approximately 44 in. tall. I am looking at a model that is 60 in tall - same capacity in gallons. Do I need to look at one the same height as the old one - or will the taller models work with the same plumbing etc.

Thanks for any help you can give.

  1. Taller model will work, as long as your pipes can be adjusted to reach the connections on the new tank.  Usually, hot water tanks are measured in gallons, not in inches.  You should get a 40 gallon tank to be sure there's enough hot water in your home.

  2. Some of the pipes will need to be replumbed to fit the new water heater. You'll notice the inlet (cold) pipe enters the water heater at the top. The outlet (hot) exits also at the top. With the difference in height...the inlet and outlet pipes will need to be extended to fit the new heater. If you plan to do it yourself...get a how-to book so you'll have complete directions on hand. Otherwise...get a pro.

  3. go to Lowes......they have what you need and can assemble it in your house
