Another windy day helps New Zealand Sailing Team at 2011 Weymouth and Portland International Regatta
New Zealand sailors in all classes of 2011 Weymouth and Portland International Regatta had another windy day at Weymouth and Portland waters which helped some of them improve their positions in the respective class standings. The NZ sailing teams participated
in all classes of the event but so far they have grabbed strong positions in Laser and 49er classes.
The racing area on sixth day of Weymouth and Portland International Regatta was filled with strong winds gusting around 18 to 22 knots over the racing area.
Andrew Murdoch didn’t sail up to the expectations but still managed to hold the second position in Laser fleet. Meanwhile in the 49er class, Peter Burling and Blair Tuke sailed brilliantly under strong wind conditions to secure third spot overall in the
49er standings. Another impressive performance from Jon-Paul Tobin in the RS:X Men fleet where he took a second and a fourth place to hit the fifth position.
While speaking to the local media, Peter Burling’s father Richard Burling said, “Really close racing in the 49er, it looked really shifty and puffy on the Nothe course and the boys were never safe with their four lap 30-32 minute races.”
He added, “They went back to restart in the first race of day which had them in catch up mode all race, but just as well they went back as the boats either side of them were scored OCS.”
Current standings of New Zealand sailors in all classes:
2nd - Andrew Murdoch: Laser (4, 5, 2, 3, 11, 4)
3rd - Peter Burling and Blair Tuke: 49er (11, 16, 3, 3, 1, 3, 9, 5, 3)
