  1. I think that popular literature should be allowed for reading in schools and perhaps at times studied. It can be hard to get students to read, especially when you have to slog through something like All Quiet on the Western Front (a book I had particular trouble reading in high school), so why not let students read interesting books? What is important is that they are practicing their reading skills and learning that books are not just homework. I think it is important to still introduce and study the classics, but teachers need to think more broadly about what is reading and what the ultimate goal of their classes are (to encourage adult reading or to have students memorize the allegory of The Grapes of Wrath).

p.s. I don't think they're taught because they are considered "trash", not worthy of academic study.

  2. many of those books are just for fun, but don't really have much as far as exposing us to a different way of life or a revelation.  That's why it's not taught in schools, but it's fine for you to read for leisure (that's what it's designed for anyways).

  3. wat does this have to do with special edu ?

  4. i think books written by people like Zane shouldn't be taught in schools because they are written merely for entertainment, what kind of information could they provide?
