Answer Vibrato Question?

I joined the school's choir before summer vacation. I'd like to return to school with a smooth sounding vibrato so that I can impress my music teacher. What exercises should I do to achieve this vibrato? Can anyone give me some tips?

  1. No exercises!  Vibrato is (supposed to be) a natural thing and unless you are taking private lessons and your voice has completely stopped changing (meaning you are done growing) it's not a good idea.

Until the Romantic Era in music (early-mid 1800's) no one sang with vibrato.  Singing was all about how pure your voice could be (as in, no vibrato!) and many voice professors at music conservatories are going back to this principle.  Just think if it this way, you can sing with vibrato and maybe it will go well, or you can sing without vibrato and (if you're a decent singer) it will go really well because your music teacher will just hear your voice with no distraction.

Really the only people who use vibrato frequently are opera singers.  Most pop stars nowadays can't hold out their notes long enough to use vibrato.  Well, most pop singers can't really sing but that's another question.

My voice teacher always discouraged vibrato until she felt the student could really handle it.  And that meant a minimum of voice lessons for a year, plus extra studying about the vocal chords and surrounding areas of your throat.

Just sing!  Don't worry about vibrato. If it happens great, if it doesn't, great.
