A 10 foot rope ladder hangs over the side of a boat with the bottom rung on the surface of the water. The rungs are one foot apart, and the tide goes up at the rate of 6 inches per hour. How long will it be until three rungs are covered?

    1 rung= 12 inches

    6 inches= 1/2 a rung

  5. DOH!! never, the tide won't go up the side of the boat. the boat rides up on the tide.

  6. Depends on how long you wait to drill a hole in the bottom of the boat.

  7. The boat will float at the same level unless you load the boat. The ladder will never reach into the water.

  8. Never, the boat and ladder rise together.  This was an old riddle when I was a kid forty years ago.
