Suppose you could drill a hole through the Earth and then drop into it. How long would it take you to pop up on the other side of the Earth?

Does anybody know?

  1. do you know? this sounds sorta like a trick question...

    YOU CANT!!! I WIN!!!

  2. You wouldn't.  At a certain depth the heat would be so great you'd be burnt to a crisp and your ashes vaporized.

  3. if you were to drill a hole all the way through, so you end up in china or sumwhere on the other side it would take you about 2 days of falling. but its impossible. 1. you would be vaporised about 70 seconds in due to extreme heat or the magma and core. 2. no drills would ever be able to bore that far without complety melting. so next time you go to the beach and you take ur spade think twice and dont waste ur time =D

  4. 42 minutes

  5. Well if you did that it would depend on were you are going. If youlive near water then it would have to be really deep to got to____ area.If you talking about you live ____ and want to get to lets say Japan then it would take years to get the equipment and then drill to the place.

  6. Assuming you corrected for temperature and pressure problems as talked about by others, you'd have gravity to contend with.

Actually you'd fall to the center of the Earth when you jumped, but once you got to the center there you'd actually decelerate to the other side of the earth - that is, you'd be pulled back to the center of the Earth once you passed it. You'd be a bit like a pendulum - you'd speed up as you fell towards the center of the earth, slow down as you headed away from the center of the earth, then fall back down towards the center of the earth again. This process would repeat until such time as the friction of the air around you stopped you in the center of the earth (you'd slow down - that is - go less and less high - with each return towards the center of the earth).

That's because here on the surface of the earth, the entire earth is underneath you and pulling it towards you. That's what you currently feel as weight. But in the center of the earth, the entire mass of the earth is all around you, meaning that the net force on you is 0 - in the center of earth you are weightless. As you go towards the other side of the earth the mass of the earth is behind you, pulling you back to the center, which would make you accelerate and decelerate like a pendulum, slowing only due to the force of friction from the air around you.
