okay so at the grocery store, like safeway for example, you know those metal thing they use that hold the plastic bags where they bag your stuff? why is there always a random small sponge piece stuck in the part of the metal that sticks out?

Maybe because the bags stick together and the sponge thing is damp and all the check out operater has do is touch it with her fingers making it easier for her to open the bags.
