  1. They don't have a queen to tell them what to do.  If you get sick of them and want to kill them, Use a mix of cinnamon and sugar. The ants will pick up the sugar, along with the cinnamon, and take it back to their queen. Ants can’t digest cinnamon and once the queen dies from not being able to digest the cinnamon the colony will die without her.

  2. Ant farms are a lot of fun and it's great to watch and learn about those fascinating little creatures.

To have a successful ant farm you need several things:

    1- Fine-grained dirt packed tightly.

2- A small piece of sponge soaked with water "at all times", and placed on top of the soil.

3- Food, like freshly dead insects (crickets are good), tiny pieces of meat occasionally, tiny pieces of fruit, etc.

4- As many "worker ants" as you can gather up.

5- A "tightly sealed" container with glass walls to house the ants and the dirt in.

6- A small "fine-mesh" screened in hole on the top for air.

7- *This is the most important thing of all;  you MUST have the queen.  She will, with out a doubt, be the hardest to dig up.  She will be at the "bottom" of the ant nest, and can be anywhere from a couple of feet, to 10' down in the earth.  She will be very difficult to get, BUT without her, your ant farm tenants will not survive long and your farm will NOT be a success.  She can be identified from the workers because she will be the largest ant, have no wings, and have the largest abdomen of all.  She will be tended by many workers and surrounded by them.  As you dig around her, they will be in a panic to protect her and move her to safety.

Believe it or not, ants can be "purchased" for your ant farm.  A queen too, if you want to pay the price.  You can probably find these on the internet.  Try it.

If you "collect" ONLY workers from your garden, they will dig down and make chambers and live for a short while, but your ant farm will not survive long without their queen.

Good luck, have fun, and do NOT give up.

  3. Because just maybe perhaps they don't want to?
