  1. Of course, ant poison works best.

But organic? I once camped out - roughing it - and after we set up in the only decent spot, we had ants bad.

I happened to remember that "sweet fern" - has a wooden stem and narrow leaves with jagged edges, strong smell (spicy), and grows in clumps in sandy soil - repels ants.

We found a bunch - it grows like a weed - and put a lot of leaves on the ground in our tarp.

Stayed several days with no problem.

  2. Sounds like you poured something sweet into your compost.

Why not just drench the bucket with water to drown the ants?  I can't think of anything more organic than that.  Scalding water over the ants will definitely kill them.

Ants help aerate the compost, but if you get too many of them, they could move elsehwhere.
