  1. don't spray at alll !!!!!!

Buy some ant stakes and simply place them in the soil of the pot and let the ants take the poison to the nest and do it's job.

You will have results in about a week with no pesticides sprayed at least.

  2. Spraying or ant stakes will cure the problem for the ants that are currently on your trees; however, it won't end the problem and puts a lot of chemicals in the area where your trees sit.  A better way is to find the source of your problem -- where is the ant hill that is supplying the ants?  You want to take it out and then you will have no problems -- on your tree or having the ants come in your house or goodness knows what else!

A safe, environmentally-friendly method is to invest in some Mule-Trained Borax.  This can be found in the laundry soap section of your local department/grocery store.  Borax is alkaline (basic), and while it would not hurt you or me, it smokes the ants!  Sprinkle it on the ant hill and wait a few days.  It works like a charm and kills the entire hill.

  3. www.antbuster.com

You dont say where you are living, so I will assume the US.  Try this site. I live in Thailand, with a horrendous ant problem indoors, and outdoor garden pots. I am ordering their product today, and happy they are international shippers. I like what I read about their product, and its darn reasonable, price wise.

  4. Insecticide will not harm your trees, garranteed
