Anthony Davis - The unanimous number one pick for this year’s NBA Draft – NBA Feature
The NBA Draft lottery will take place on Wednesday night and will decide which teams will get the top five picks in this year’s Draft. The Charlotte Bobcats finished with the worst record in the season and will have a 25% chance of landing the top pick, followed by the Washington Wizards at number 2.
Although the teams which will get the top picks are yet to be decided, the top pick of this year’s NBA Draft is unanimous. And that is Kentucky’s forward Anthony Davis.
Davis is a special kind of forward, one you don’t come across quite often. He started playing basketball as a guard, working on skills that are critical for a guard to thrive. He thus has good ball handling and dribbling skills.
However, at the age of 16, Davis had a sudden 7 inch increase in his height. That is when he started playing as a power forward and with time, he has developed exceptional blocking and rebounding abilities.
He has a huge wing span and can hit jump shots as well. With that kind of an arsenal, Davis is a dream inclusion for any team. He is the kind of basketball player around which any team can start building themselves and has the talent and potential to take any team into championship contention.
Anthony played basketball for Kentucky Wildcats, the team which he led to the NCAA state championship. In his college season, Davis averaged 14.2 points, 10.4 rebounds and a jaw dropping 4.7 blocks per game.
He might become the next Serge Ibaka of the league, given his ability to block and also has great offensive potential.
In the National Championship game against Kansas Jayhawks, Davis went 1 of 10 from the field and managed only 6 points. However, he made up for his mediocre performance on the glass with 16 rebounds and 6 blocks to lead his team to victory and was named the game’s most outstanding player.
He was also named the consensus National Player of the Year besides a list of other laurels. His entrance to the NBA has been catapulted by the fact that he has been named in the preliminary team for the Olympics in London later this year and people are already comparing him to Kevin Durant and Kevin Garnett.
NBA’s senior director of scouting operations, Ryan Blake, had this to say about Davis:
“My father (long-time basketball scout Marty Blake) always said a centre who can dominate comes along about once every 25 years; we’re talking about guys who can change the game at both ends of the floor. You could see that in Dwight Howard; that he might take some time to develop, but he would have that effect. Davis might be a power forward, but he’s so long and athletic he changes the game to that extent.”
Besides Blake, there is a list of scouts who have watched him and after careful evaluation, named him the most likely number 1 pick in the NBA Draft.
Davis is a guy with potential and talent, waiting to be groomed and guided in the NBA. Whichever team picks him will see their chances of becoming a playoff contending team increase exponentially, if they use him properly and build the right team around him.
