Anthony Davis and Terrence Jones fancy a 81-59 Kentucky Wildcats win over St. John's Red Storm: NCAA
Kentucky Wildcats forward Anthony Davis had a monster night against the St. John's Red Storm on December 1, 2011.
Davis scored 15 points, grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds and blocked eight shots - leaving him just two shy of a triple-double – as Kentucky recorded seventh consecutive victory with an 81-59 win over St. John's at Rupp Arena, Lexington.
The Wildcats set the team record with 18 blocks in the victory.
“He changed everything about the game,” Kentucky coach John Calipari said of Davis’ brilliant performance. “He blocked shots, he scored baskets, he rebounded tough rebounds, and he came up with balls.”
Terrence Jones was a rock for Kentucky on the night. He headed all scorers with 26 points, grabbed nine rebounds, stole the ball four times, and blocked four shots in 32 minutes of action. Jones ended on 7 for 12 shooting from
the field and 11 for 16 from free throw line. Doron Lamb finished with 16 points, four rebounds and three assists for Kentucky, who also outrebounded Red Storm 45-35.
God'sgift Achiuwa registered a double-double in St. John's second straight loss, adding 18 points on 6 for 15 from the floor and grabbing 10 rebounds in 38 minutes. Guard forward Moe Harkless also recorded a double-double with
16 points and 10 rebounds. He also blocked three shots, stole the ball three times and ended on an 8 for 10 shooting from free throw line.
The Wildcats limited the Red Storm to just 19 for 60 (31.7 percent) from the field.
“We did our job on defense. They were kind of rattled,” Davis said. “When we lock down defensively, we are a great defensive team. If we keep playing defense like we are right now, we will be fine.”
The Wildcats played sloppy basketball early in the first half, committing five turnovers and shooting just 2 of 11 from the floor. St. John's however struggled with their shooting as well and only managed a 5-4 lead with 15:07
to go in the opening half.
Kentucky made them pay for that and scored 12 consecutive points to go ahead by 12-point, 16-5, with 10:49 remaining. Phil Greene knocked down two consecutive jumpers, Moe Harkless hit a free throw and Achiuwa made a tip shot to
cut their deficit to four, 16-12, however, the Red Storm could never really get a lot of momentum for rest of the half and Kentucky reeled off a 15-8 run in the last six minutes for a 31-20 lead into the second.
The Wildcats pushed their lead to 16 points, 38-22, early in the second half and maintained their hold until the end of the game.
