Anthony Davis sprains ankle, will possibly be sidelined from London Olympics – NBA News
New Orleans Hornets' number 1 pick of last week’s NBA Draft Anthony Davis suffered a sprained left ankle during a Hornets workout on Sunday.
Davis was scheduled to travel to Las Vegas this week to participate in an Independence Day practice session for U.S basketball team coach Mike Krzyzewski along with Lamar Odom and Blake Griffin. The rest of the squad is due to arrive in Las Vegas on Friday.
However, sources have said that Davis will be sidelined for two weeks, making it improbable for him to participate in the training camp for the summer Olympics. Davis was added to the preliminary squad after Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic and LaMarcus Aldridge of the Portland Trail Blazers were both sidelined from the summer games with injuries. However, the injury has made it improbable for Davis to participate in the training camp and hence the Olympics.
The Hornets confirmed the injury to Davis in a statement and said he is day to day, but his chances of being healthy before the end of the week are bleak.
Krzyzewski talked with Andy Katz of ESPN.com and said that a decision on Davis has not been made yet.
“There's no definitive word yet on that. We're still planning on him coming out to Vegas and see what his condition is going forward. We haven't talked to any doctors or anything like that,” said Krzyzewski.
USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said that he had no plans of including any more players in the preliminary roster after a fresh wave of injuries that have sidelined Davis, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade.
"At this moment we do not have any plans to add anyone. We may very well be seeking permission to add someone else. In Davis' case, maybe he's not capable of going early, but maybe he would be (later)," said Colangelo.
Lamar Odom has also opted out of the Olympics as he plans on spending the summer with the Los Angeles Clippers training staff to work on his game and be ready for the next season. Only Tyson Chandler and Kevin Love are the remaining power forwards who will make it to the 12 man team for that will travel to London for the summer games.
However, Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James and Kevin Durant can all play at the power forward position in international games, although they usually start at the small forward position.
The U.S basketball team has been hit with a wave of setbacks as many important players have suffered injuries which have sidelined them from the Olympics. Derrick Rose, Chauncey Billups, LaMarcus Aldridge, Dwight Howard and now Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Anthony Davis are all players who were named in the preliminary squad but then ruled out of the Olympics due to injuries.
