Anthony Dutrow trained Candyman E and Todd Pletcher conditioned Calibrachoa among the old sprinters for the Grade 3, Toboggan Stakes on 4th February at Aqueduct
The Grade 3, $150,000 Toboggan Stakes succeeded in attracting a competitive lineup of eight older sprinters with the top of the line contenders being Calibrachoa and Candyman E. It will be held on 4th February at Aqueduct. Both
the horses have been off the tracks since quite a while.
The five-year-old Kentucky bred mare of Candy Ride out of Flo Rose ‘n Net is trained by Anthony Dutrow, and raced last on 25th March, 2011 in the Ask Joe Stakes at Gulfstream Park over a distance of six furlongs, finishing seventh.
The reason that the trainer has pulled her out for participating in her seasonal debut is due to the enticing purse of the race, particularly because the mare has to be brought down from South Florida to New York.
“That’s a bunch of money, I’m sure it’ll not be an easy race, but I’ll bet you it’d be tougher at Gulfstream,’’ Dutrow said Wednesday from south Florida. “He’s going up there 90-percent ready. I can’t know he’s going to run his best race off the layoff.”
Candyman E practiced the most while attempting to break through her maiden which she tried three times, and was successful the fourth time she raced. The distance over which she raced through her maidens ranged from six to six and a half furlongs.
The first two tries were at the Calder Race Course, and Churchill Downs the third time, and finally won at the Gulfstream Park.
Candyman E then won an allowance race on 21st February, 2011 that was raced over a distance of six furlongs where second in line was Savemyspotimbeting while finishing third after the winner was Mighty Score.
The five year old horse of Southern Image out of Fort Lauderdale, Calibrachoa is trained by Todd Pletcher and is owned by Repole Stable. His last race was the Grade 1, Cigar Mile at Aqueduct on 26th November 2011, raced over
a mile in which Calibrachao finished third.
The last race in which Calibrachoa won, was the Grade 3, Bold Ruler on 6thNovember, 2011 at Aqueduct which was raced over seven furlongs.
The rest of the lineup includes Dr Disco, Flat Bold, Rule By Night, Diski Dance, Caixa Eletronica and J J’s Lucky Train.
Calibrachoa and Candyman E will be attempting their seasonal debuts and if surfacing after relatively long breaks would impact their performance or not, is yet to be seen.
