Anthony Hughes declared Sport Wales Coach of the Year, 2011
Anthony Hughes, the renowned disability coach, bagged the Sport Wales Coach of the Year Award today. For relying on unique techniques in honing the disable athletes’ athletic acumen, the coach had already won the world title, and is now looking forward to
the London Olympics 2012.
Known to establish the Disability Sport Wales academy, Hughes’ contributions in promoting athletics in Wales are huge. He has been producing elite athletes for quite some time.
It was because of his training that the Welsh athletes became capable of contributing significantly to UK’s medal tally, in the World Athletics Championships.
Some of the stellar performers who were trained under his supervision and who produced impressive results in the national and international contests were: Nathan Stephens and Aled-sion Davies.
Besides preparing physically disabled players for various games, Hughes himself is a wheelchair user, for which he won the Coach to Disabled Performers category award.
Besides Hughes, Stuart Conner was also among the coaches whose efforts as a successful coach were acknowledged.
Cherishing the association of such rich coaching talent across Wales, Huw Lewis, the Minister for Sports said, “We have a wealth of talented sports coaches across Wales and their dedication and passion in helping athletes of all abilities to reach their
full potential. These inspirational coaches instill virtues beyond sporting excellence such as discipline, team work, patience and striving to be your best”.
The minister was of the view that the contribution of both, professionals and volunteer coaches, should be acknowledged and their hard work must be recognized.
Expressing somewhat similar thoughts, Professor Laura McAllister, the Chair of Sport Wales said, “As well as my pride in seeing Welsh athletes and teams pick up medals and trophies, learning about the inspirational work of these coaches and volunteers are
one of the best parts of my role at Sport Wales”.
She said that the huge success that the athletes from Wales were claiming with consistency was being fueled by the hard work of these coaches who put in hours and hours of efforts over weeks and played a role in creating opportunities to build a better generation
of athletes.
