Anthony Joe topples Rowan Henderson in Men’s Singles tie of 2012 Ede Clendinnen Shield tournament
Men’s Singles shuttler Anthony Joe of The Territories continued with his top form and stunned Rowan Henderson in Ede Clendinnen Shield Sydney on Tuesday, August 28, 2012.
The underrated but talented Anthony registered his mark by sealing a straight-set victory with 21-16 and 21-18 score after a 38-minute exercise.
He defied all odds to fetch a valuable match point for his team and his honest effort was appreciated by the local crowd.
Meanwhile, the opposing shuttler made every effort to avoid a woeful defeat but he could not withstand the intensive campaign of his challenger.
Anthony Joe set the foundation of his supremacy straight away in first set as he swept the table with a respectable lead in the concluding margin.
In the first half of the set, he started the beating from the very first stroke and kept his competitor grounded until last shot was played.
He enthralled Rowan with a fine blend of power packed smashes and deceiving drop net shots. He mounted pressure with a figure of 11 at half time.
The Tasmanian campaigner showed elevated craft immediately after the interval and counter-balanced the situation with a couple of valuable points in a row.
Though, Rowan Henderson put his challenger under huge pressure but his short campaign could not keep him on top permanently.
He lost focus in the third quarter of the set and allowed Anthony to reinstate his dominance. He could not come out of this phase and surrendered after reading 16-21 margin on the board.
This timely win boosted The Territories’ shuttler’s confidence and he played with more conviction in the following set of the match.
Anthony, who was an underdog earlier in this tournament, dominated the overall pace of the opening rallies and cornered his rival without wasting any time.
He kept on moving forward at a steady pace and made the difference with a mountainous total of 11 at mid-game break.
However, he made some fatal mistakes immediately after the interval which weakened his grip. This got him in trouble and he remained at the lower end in the third quarter of the set.
Anthony put all in his possession to reclaim his status and hit the mark with a laudable knock of 21-18.
