Anthony McGill beats Graeme Dott in semi-final: 2011 Scottish Professional Championship
Anthony McGill has beaten Graeme Dott by a frame score of 5-3 in a best-of-nine frames semi-final match of
2011 Scottish Professional Championship, which is being held at the Lucky Break Snooker Club, Clydebank, Scotland.
The Former World Champion, Graeme Dott, who impressively beat James McBain by a frame score of 5-2 in the quarter-final, crashed out in the semis. However, the 20-year-old local boy, McGill, on the same note produced a high standard game to see off the red-hot
favourite.
Dott dominated the opening frame with a decisive break of 57 to have the first blood 1-0. Second frame was a scrappy affair. A bout of safety play was seen among the players with many chances coming and going but in the end, it was McGill who came on top
to level the things by 1-1.
In the third frame, McGill was the first one to be among the balls but he lost his nerves, breaking down on 47, though he was lucky to get back on the table as Dott also failed to capitalise on the opportunity. McGill made no mistakes this time and clinched
the frame to lead by 1-2. Fourth frame was over within a blink of an eye, as Dott produced a classy break of 81 in it to equal the score by 2-2 before the interval.
After the interval it was again the world number nine, Dott, who pocketed the first frame with a dominant break of 51 to restore his one frame lead by 3-2.
The things were going normal as of yet, as both players were trading frames constantly but everyone was left flabbergasted when the underdog, McGill, took all of the following three frames to seal his victory.
The world number 55, McGill, gave no chance to his experienced compatriot in the sixth frame, as he compiled a magnificent break of 88 to level the scores at 3-3. He also took the following fourth frame without doing anything outstanding to leave his opponent
down by one frame with two to play.
Fifth frame was a little dramatic. Though McGill fired a magnificent break of 64 in it, he missed a simple black ball. Dott had a good chance there but snooker did not come for him until McGill finished the matters off with a spectacular long pot of the
red to secure a place in the final.
Anthony McGill, after another shocking win, has now set up a clash with the current world number one player, John Higgins, who has cruised into the final after beating the seven-time world champion, Stephen Hendry.
