Anthony McGill beats Graeme Dott to cruise into the final - 2011 Scottish Professional Snooker Championship
The young Anthony McGill made another upset on Wednesday, 13 April when he defeated the 2010 world championship finalist, Graeme Dott in the semi-final round. He defeated Dott with a frame score of 5-3 in the 2011 Scottish Professional Snooker Championship
at the Lucky Break Snooker Club in Clydebank, Glasgow.
With this semi-final win, McGill has booked his spot in the final match against the world number one John Higgins. The youngster bounced in the quarter-final when he beat Stephen Maguire convincingly by 5-3. He gave the same medicine to Dott to flick him
out of the tournament and move into the title match.
The semi-final clash was a topsy-turvy affair in Glasgow, as the young Scottish produced a classy snooker to unsettle the man who is comparatively a lot more experienced than him.
The match started smoothly but soon it turned into a thrilling battle as both the cueists played outstanding shots in the later session of the match. Dott got off the mark playing some offensive snooker and took a 1-0 starting lead with a rattling half-century
clearance of 57 in the first frame. The second frame was a scrappy affair which was painted with mistakes. The Tartan Nugget, McGill, held up his nerves and played cautiously to stop Dott going for a 2-0 lead and levelled the game 1-1.
Dott’s 47-point clearance went all in vain before McGill took charge and stumbled upon the table in the third frame. The 20-year-old McGill took advantage of the gifted chances provided by Dott and raced towards a 2-1 lead in the match. Dott was nudged one
frame down before he gathered his spark and came back with the proceedings to change the match direction in his favour. He levelled the game 2-2 with his quality snooker after he fired a 81-point break starting from a long red.
After the mid-break, a 51-point sensational break brought Dott back into the game and he restored his one-frame lead at 3-2. However, this was not the end for McGill as the young snooker star changed the environment of the game at once when he bagged a fine
break of 88 points in the sixth frame and tied at 3-3.
After that Dott never left his seat as McGill capitalised over his error and took a one-frame lead at 4-3. The Scotsman, Anthony McGill missed a black inexplicably after he fired a superb 64 break in the eighth frame. At that time it seemed that the match
is going to end in a decider but Dott made a mistake on a long red and McGill took the frame as well as the semi-final victory.
The youngster, Anthony McGill will go head-to-head with the legend John Higgins in the final of the Scottish Professional Snooker Championship on Thursday, 14 April at the same venue. The final with the former three-time world champion John Higgins will
be thriller if he shows the same fire in the arena.
