Anthony McGill upsets Stephen Maguire: Scottish Professional Championship 2011 – Snooker news
Anthony McGill has beaten Stephen Maguire by a frame score of 5-3 in a best-of-nine frames quarter-final match of 2011 Scottish Professional Championship, which is being held at the Lucky Break Snooker Club, Clydebank, Scotland.
It was an accomplishing performance from the 20-year-old Scot, McGill, as he dumped out one of the best player present in the game to cruise into the last four.
The local boy, McGill, started off pretty confidently, as he also had the crowd at his back, and took the first blood. He also was the first one to be among the balls in the second frame but an unfortunate kick on the red after a break of 38 brought his
opponent on the table. Though Maguire could not clinch the frame at his first visit, he dramatically levelled the things in the end by 1-1 on a respotted black.
The Live Wire, Maguire, also took the following third and fourth and went ahead by a lead of two frames, 3-1, before the interval.
It looked as if the former world number two, Maguire, will secure a place in the last four but everybody was left flabbergasted when the young lad, McGill, completely turned the tables over his experienced opponent.
After the interval, he bounced back into the game and produced a classy break of 71 in the fifth frame to come within one frame at 3-2. Sixth frame was a scrappy affair. A bout of safety play was seen among both players but in the end, it was McGill who
came on top and levelled the scores by 3-3.
First chance in the seventh frame fell for the 30-year-old Maguire but he again lost control of his emotions, breaking down on 40 and when the chance presented itself, McGill slotted a magnificent break of 75 to wrap up the frame.
There was a shock on the cards, as McGill had left Maguire down by one frame with two to play.
Eighth frame was again a dramatic one. Maguire was on the run first in it and it looked as if there is going to be a decider but suddenly things changed when he lost his nerves after a carving break of 61. He attempted a long red’s pot which stuck on the
jaws. McGill stepped in quickly and fully capitalised the given chance to finish the matters off by 5-3.
Anthony McGill will now face Graeme Dott in the semi-final. Hopefully, it is going to be a promising match, as both players are playing on the top of their game.
