Anthony Petruso and Chase Wilson emerge triumphant in Round 2 of ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic
America’s Anthony Petruso and his fellow countryman Chase Wilson advanced through into the third round (Round of 96) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Vans Pier Classic after walking away with top honours from their respective Round
2 (Round of 128) heats that went down at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Wednesday, March 28.
America’s Michael Powell and his compatriot Oliver Kurtz advanced through into the next round as well after securing runner-up position in the 13th and 14th heat respectively.
The surfing conditions prevailing at the primary event site on the opening day of the latest ASP 4-Star event turned out to be nothing short of challenging, making the competition field that comprised of both local as well as international surfers work really
hard to get their hands on a decent score.
The 13th heat saw Petruso adjust quite nicely to the clean two-to-four foot waves that were on offer to prevail over Powell, Puerto Rico’s Alejandro Moreda and Costa Rico’s Carlos Munoz.
The American surfer went through a series of average-scores before locking his first business-wave to post a 6.23 on the scoreboard. He soon followed it up with an impressive 7.83-point wave to take the lead, which held up until the end to seal the fate
of the four-man battle in his favour.
Powell was nothing short of impressive either and made the Round 3 cut as well after finishing with a heat-total of 13.00 points, which included a 6.00 and 7.00-point wave.
Moreda finished in third place with a two-wave total of 9.50 points, whereas Munoz rounded out the bottom position with a heat-total of 9.34 points. Both the surfers were forced to step out of the contention for the event title as a result of their lacklustre
performances.
The 14th heat turned out to be yet another low-scoring affair, with a heat-total of 10.27 by Wilson proving to be sufficient to earn him victory and take him through into the next round of the event.
Kurtz successfully extended his life in the competition field as well after scoring a 3.17 off his first business-wave and adding an additional 6.83 to his account to finish with a heat-total of 10.00 points.
Hawaii’s Charlie Carroll finished third with a heat-total of 9.04 points, whereas America’s Jensen Callaway rounded out the fourth position after scoring a heat-total of 8.57 points. The bottom-two finish resulted in the elimination of both the surfers.
