Anthony Rizzo sparks as San Diego Padres defeat Kansas City Royals 4-1 - MLB Update
San Diego Padres’ first baseman, Anthony Rizzo did an amazing job with his bat as he went 1-for-4 with the bat and hit two RBIs in the Padres’ 4-1 win against the Kansas City Royals at Petco Park, San Diego on June 29.
It was the first series win for the Padres after a long span as they squeezed a victory and sealed the three-game series 3-0 at San Diego.
First two innings of the game went without any run as the batters played some lethargic shots. Melky Cabrera was the first batter who fouled out towards third base and then Chris Getz flied out towards centre-field at the top of the first inning. The Padres’
batters also looked unsteady as Chris Denorfia got out towards right and Chase Headley struck-out swinging when Cameron Maybin stole second base.
During the third inning, both the teams moved their score-card by getting some respective runs. At the top of the third, Cabrera posted one run when Eric Hosmer singled to right-centre. On the other hand, the Padres’ batters smashed four quick runs to go-ahead
4-1 at the bottom of the third inning.
Ryan Ludwick doubled off deep left and Tim Stauffer posted a single run. The second and third run was taken by Denorfia and Ludwick when Rizzo drove a single-run shot towards right-field. Later, Orlando Hudson reached to third base on an infield single while
Rizzo contributed the last run of the game.
The last six innings of the game went score-less as the pitchers delivered perfect balls. In the sixth inning, Hosmer was grounded out to third base and Alex Gordon struck-out swinging without providing any run to their team. The Royals missed the scoring
opportunities at the top of the seventh when Mike Moustakas popped out towards first base and Alcides Escobar got out at second base.
Moustakas said, “It went up in the air and we didn't communicate very well. There is a tough sun up there on that side of the field and I came in at the last second, saw the ball coming down and tried to take a swipe at it.”
Stauffer also shined for the Padres as he pitched seven innings and gave up just one run on four hits with one earned run. He was able to strike-out six batters and walked two on his 107 pitches. Stauffer said, “I think we're playing the brand of baseball
we needed to play to be successful. Limiting the runs given up early, then getting the lead and sticking with it with our pitching and defence, we feel pretty confident about playing with anybody.”
The Royals’ starter, Bruce Chen was expensive as he permitted four runs on eight hits in his six inning pitches and had six strike-outs. The Padres went on to beat the Royals for a much needed win.
