Anthony Wall has the lead in Sicilian Open – Golf Open
England’s Anthony Wall is now leading the Sicilian Open when he recorded a two shot lead on the second round of the championship here at the scenic Donnafugata Golf Resort & Spa. Wall, who had tied for fourth place at the opening round, clinched an early
lead with a 4-under for 67.
With birdies on the fourth and sixth hole and an amazing eagle at the 12th hole, Wall now has a total of 133 with 9-under. He spoke with the press and attributed his success to his improved shorter game. He said he had been concentrating on the
last third on a putt rather than the whole putt, something which has definitely helped him. He also revealed that he also had a secret weapon up his sleeves the whole time.
He explained, "I bought a Dave Stockton iPhone app about reading greens and that is the best 59 pence I have ever spent, because his tips have really simplified a few things for me. I haven't holed everything but I have hit my putts a lot better. It was
a bargain, I have to say - you don't get many valuable lessons for 59 pence these days!"
Wall is hoping to register his second win on the European Tour. 35-year-old Wall turned professional in 1995 and has been playing on the European tour for more than a decade. He won the Alfred Dunhill Championship in 2000 in South Africa, his only high profile
victory so far.
First round leaders, Stephen Dodd and Jose Manuel Lara, with their less impressive performances, slipped far behind on the leaderboard. Dodd, with 72, is now in fourth place, while Lara suffered the most with no less than five bogeys and just one birdie.
Flu stricken Ryders Cup’s European captain, Colin Montgomery, continued his better sport with two birdies for 69. "I'm not feeling very well - terrible flu - so I did well today," he said. "That was okay, to not drop a shot. I haven't dropped a shot since
the first two holes of round one, things are looking up.”
Montgomery tied for 17th place with a score of 69 the previous day.
