Anthony Walsh and Camilo Hernandez advance to Round 2 at Arica World Star Tour – Surfing News
Australia’s Anthony Walsh and Chile’s Camilo Hernandez claimed victory in their respective Round 1 (Round of 80) heats at the Arica World Star Tour, a 3-Star Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) event presented by Maui and Sons, which continued at
the beach-break of El Gringo in Arica, Chile, on Wednesday, June 13.
The superb performance by Walsh in the fifth heat of Round 1 earned him the win and consequently took him through into the second round (Round of 64). He was accompanied into the next round by Marcos Monteiro from Brazil, who took a second-place finish.
Chile’s Giovanni Visconti and his fellow countryperson Cristobal Gonzalez failed to make the Round 2 cut following the bottom-two finish.
The sixth heat saw Hernandez take out the battle to confirm his spot in the next round, while his compatriot Renato Aguirre successfully extended his life in the event as well following his runner-up finish. Brazil’s Patrick Bizzi and Patrick Korny were
sent packing after the former finished in third place while the latter was remained absent from the heat.
The latest ASP star event had attracted a huge field of surfers from around the globe to Chile, offering them a chance to get their hands on a winning prize of up to $55,000 and coveted ASP ranking points. The surfing conditions prevailing at the main venue
on the opening day turned out to be pretty challenging, keeping the young guns on the back-foot.
Walsh, however, did exceptionally well to the tame the sea during the fifth heat of Round 1. The Australian surfer got down to work early and caught a juicy wave to earn an 8.50 off it. He backed it up with an even more spectacular 8.90-point ride to reach
a heat-total of 17.40 points, a score that received no significant threat from his rivals.
Monteiro extended his life in the competition as well after securing runner-up place through his heat-total of 10.75 points.
Visconti scored a two-wave total of 3.55 points, whereas Gonzalez only managed to reach a heat-total of 2.90 points. The dismissal performance led to the elimination of both the Chileans from the competition.
The sixth heat featured a low-scoring affair, with the surfers struggling to cope with the demanding surfing conditions on hand.
Hernandez only managed to score a 2.25 and 3.25 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 5.50 points, which proved sufficient to earn him top honours.
Aguirre collected a couple of scores in the one-point range for a heat-total of 2.60 points. Despite his mediocre performance, he still made the Round 2 cut.
Bizzi finished with a heat-total of 2.15 points, while Korny was unable to show up for the heat. Both the surfers were consequently removed from the contention for the event title.
