Anthony Walsh and Camilo Hernandez emerge triumphant in Round 3 at Arica World Star Tour
Australia’s Anthony Walsh and Chile’s Camilo Hernandez moved into the fourth round (Round of 16) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star Maui and Sons Arica World Star Tour after clinching top honours in their respective Round 3 (Round of
32) heats that went down at the reef break of El Gringo in Arica, Chile, on Friday, June 15.
The fifth heat further sent Peru’s Sebastian Correa into the next round after finishing just behind Walsh in runner-up place. Chile’s Renato Aguirre and Venezuela’s Francisco Bellorin exited the competition field after rounding out the third and fourth position
respectively.
Brazil’s Paulo Moura took second-place finish in the sixth heat to accompany Hernandez into the next round. Chile’s Guillermo Satt finished in third place, while Brazil’s Victor Ribas rounded out the fourth position. Both the surfers were consequently removed
from the contention for the latest ASP 3-Star event title.
The latest day of the competition saw the surfers having to surf even closer to the menacing reef break. Despite a decrease in swell, the waves still lay in the three-to-five point range, offering the local and international surfing talent plenty of opportunities
to exhibit their skills.
The fifth heat saw Walsh claim a convincing victory after an energetic hunt for his two best scores of 4.50 and 6.75, which resultant in a heat-total of 11.25 points.
Correa scored a 4.40 off his first business-wave and backed it up with a 2.90-point ride for a heat-total of 7.30 points. The score proved sufficient to carry him through into the next round.
Aguirre finished in third place with a heat-total of 4.35 points, while Bellorin had to settle for a bottom-place finish for a heat-total of 3.20 points. The dismissal performance brought an end to their run at the latest ASP star event.
The sixth heat featured one of the most anticipated clashes as the two 2011 Maui and Sons Arica World Star Tour finalists Hernandez and Moura came across each other. Satt and Ribas were also part of the four-man bout, competing for a place in the next round.
As the heat got underway, Hernandez got off to a promising start, earning a 5.75 off it. He later backed it up with a long barrel ride to post an 8.50 on the score-board, thus reaching a heat-total of 14.25 points.
A 7.00 in the opening minutes of the heat was just what Moura needed to make himself a plausible threat. However, he failed to back it up with another solid score, managing to only add an additional 4.90 points to his account to finish with a heat-total
of 11.90 points.
Satt and Ribas got eliminated from the competition following their lacklustre efforts for a heat-total of 10.50 and 2.88 points respectively.
