In No Reservations, when Anthony Bourdain is in Laos he eats some soup for breakfast... I think he says it's made with chicken, duck and pork. Does anybody know what this is called? Or where to find a recipe?? It looked really good and I want to make some!!

Thanks,

  1. go to www.foodnetwork.com

    it's probably on there.

  2. Here you go...

  3. That soup is called "Kow Piek", which translated in English means wet rice. This is NOT Pho...similar ways of cooking it though. Pho is usually made with beef stock. Kow Piek is made with either chicken or pork stock and meat. The noodles are different from pho as well as it's much softer and chewier then regular rice noodles. A substitute for the noodles can be to use just plain jasmine rice as well. (My favorite!) But every plate will be different as everyone has different tastes..it's all about the extra condiments you add to your bowl! ie...soy sauce, chilli powder, lime, fish sauce, black pepper, green onions, fried onions. etc....d**n now I'm hungry!!

  4. foodnetwork.com type in Anthony Bourdain: No Reservation-Laos and that should take you to the recipe you are looking for. I was so hungry after watching that I made a raman with chile flakes, garlic powder, onion powder, vinegar and chopped cilantro. It was so good I think the next time I will add some pork!!!!

  5. It's called "FURR", Laotian breakfast soup.  Here's a basic recipe but there are many variations:

This soup is a very popular breakfast dish and usually has noodles, bits of pork, garlic, and Laotian leaves. Other Southeast Asian countries have their own version and recipe for furr.

    Ingredients:

      ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚€Â¢ 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚€Â¢ 3/4 cup minced raw pork

      ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚€Â¢ 2 cloves garlic, minced

      ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚€Â¢ 1 cup chopped onion

ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚€Â¢ 1/2 cup pumpkin, cut into 1/2 inch cubes

ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚€Â¢ 1 cup long beans, cut into 3/4 inch pieces (substitute green beans)

ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚€Â¢ 2 red serrano or jalapeño chiles, stems and seeds removed, minced

      ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚€Â¢ 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms

ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚€Â¢ 1 quart beef or chicken stock

ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚€Â¢ 1 handful Laotian leaf (or substitute rau ram, a Vietnamese herb)

      ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚€Â¢ 1/4 pound rice vermicelli

Heat the oil in a heavy saucepan and saute the pork. Push the pork to one side and saute the garlic and the onion. Then add the pumpkin, beans, chiles, and the mushrooms and saute the vegetables for 30 seconds.

Pour in the stock and bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and add the Laotian leaf and the vermicelli. Simmer the soup for 30 minutes, or until the vermicelli is cooked.

    Yield: 4 servings
