Tell the story of the early members of the Genus Homo as if you were talking to a friend at a party. You can mention their physical and behavior traits, however, you should emphasize why they were important to our evolutionary history. You will be graded based upon how well you put things into simple terms that a non-expert could understand.

  1. I am a big fan of Homo erectus though I am not sure I would say this at any party.  They might get the wrong idea.  Homo erectus is believed to have migrated out of Africa nearly two million years ago.  He moved into Southeast Asia.  There were periods when the sea levels dropped allowing them access to several islands in Indonesia.  They also travelled north to China.  Homo erectus seems to have evolved into a very small creature, Homo floresesiensis, the Hobbit, a small biped that is about 3 feet tall.  It is interesting that there are and have been stories of similar creatures known as Teh Lma and Orang Pendek to this day.  Homo erectus also evolved into Homo erectus meganthropus which was a giant that lived on the island of Java.  Some scientists disagree on how big it was.  Homo erectus also possibly evovled into H. heidelbergensis which is probably our direct ancestor.  There is some dispute that it may have been H. ergaster which is a very close relative.  Homo erectus lived to at least 20,000 years ago on the island of Java.  Homo erectus was very athletic.  He could probably rip Arnold Schwartenegger apart, especially the large ones.  They wielded a sharp throwing stone called a hand axe which they used for nearly a million years. There is some evidence that H. erecutus could speak based on development of its brain but its spinal chord indicated it lacked the muscle control needed for modern human language.

  2. since this is your assignment and not mine, i'm not going to help you cheat but i will assist in a small way.  the early human species probably originated in the african basin of kenya & branched out in three direction.  northwest, northeast & direct to the eastern quadrant. another group stayed in kenya region.  in other words, europe, mid to northern regions of europe/asia, asia & africa.   each of these groups of early homo erectus took different forms to combat the weather & climate.  you have the three forms of human development today. the three racial differences (main ones anyway) probably be traced to the three directions early humans traveled & developed:  mongoloid/asian, *******/african & caucasoid/european.  the groups inbetween are sub-groups of the big three.  anyway, the rest is yours as you'll need to flesh out all of this & prove to yourself that i'm telling you the truth & not lying.  how would you know? want to risk failure? i dunno!

  3. Well this sounds like an assignment so I will not tell you how I would write the story but being that I have taken many many human evolution courses I feel that I can lead you in teh right direction.  You will of course want to include Homo Halibus (Handy man) and Homo Erectus who was pretty much identical to modern humans except with a little smaller brain.  Erectus was the first to travel out of Africa.  There are other species of course but those are the biggies.  The assignment - you'll have to do that yourself.

  4. Just to retake the answer above me... H.O.M.O habilis, not halibus... Your typing too fast and may confuse him... maybe...;)
