Question:

Anthropogenic Global Warming?

AGW believers, how do explain the recent data and articles that show that the global average temperature hasn't increased since 1998, and has actually been falling since 2002, yet CO2 levels are still increasing (this is measured data, not modeled)?

Also, explain why plant physiologists are now saying that he optimum CO2 level for plant growth is 1000ppm (we're currently at 388 ppm).

  1. 70 MILLION TONS!!! of CO2 is pumped into our planet's appleskin thin atmosphere by MAN -EVERY DAY!!!!!!!!

CO2 is a  strong greenhouse gas.

THIS IS THE CAUSE of GWarming!

NASA says GW is man-made. NASA sent us to the moon! But some skeptics dont even believe that. Some of these morons still believe the earth is flat in fact.

Go to school, get educated. The Trillion dollar Fossil fuel industry sheisters are everywhere trying to confuse the uneducated masses. Get educated. Science is real and GW is real.

Dont believe the crackpots. Most are over 60 and dont CARE if the earth boils because THEYLL BE DEAD ANYWAY in 20 years. If you're young, you should be very very concerned about GWarming.

  2. The AVERAGE temperature has increased, although 1998 was an unusually warm year.  The graph below shows the 5 year average (the red line), which filters out unusually warm/cold years; and shows both the long term trend, and the fact that 1998 was a statistical "outlier".

If everything else stayed the same, more CO2 WOULD be good.

But changing temperatures, and changing precipitation, and changing seasons will do far more damage to crops, than increased CO2 would do good.  This report gives details:

  3. CO2 being optimum at 1000 ppm?  CO2 is not a limiting nutrient for plants even at the current level today or most previous levels lower than 388 ppm. That statement is wrong but please link me to the scholarly reviewed paper that talks about it since it would be interesting to read about.

Could you please cite your source that explains its methods of measuring global temperature.

  4. It is not true that the global average temperature has not increased since 1998.

    A. It is a misconception that for global warming to be true, then each year must be warmer then the last. If climate was simple, and it had only one influence, then each year would be warmer then the rest.

    B. Be weary of deniers and articles that single out one year. People who do this usually have "cherry picked" there information to include only what supports their argument and have excluded contrary information. Why do these people not use 1997 or 1999 instead?

    C. Climate is defined as weather averaged over a period of time, generally around 30 years. This averaging over time removes the random and unpredictable behavior of weather. The year 1998 was a strong El Nino year. If you want to talk about climate, then talk about averages. Here is a graph of the average global temperatures: http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/graphs... Notice how the 5 year mean (average) is rising, even through 1998 and 2002.

    D. The simple fact is, not only is the global warming, Global Warming is accelerating: http://www.realclimate.org/images/giss-1... Side by side 15-year averages do show that global warming has not stopped in 1998, or 2002, or 2005, or any other year the deniers try to cherry pick.

    E. It is not necessarily true that higher CO2 levels will boost plant growth and food production: http://environment.newscientist.com/chan...

  5. Easy - just look at the data.  Five-year running average from NASA:

Best fit line of NASA and Hadley data since 1998 and 2000:

Whoever is arguing that "the global average temperature hasn't increased since 1998, and has actually been falling since 2002" is ignoring the data.

As for your second point, even if true, it ignores the fact that plants don't benefit from the associated temperature increase and drought increase that comes with an increase of atmospheric CO2.  Please see the link below for further details.

  6. Clearly "global warming" is done and over with

    http://images.dailytech.com/nimage/7390_...

Over the past year, evidence for a cooling planet has exploded. China has its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad sees its first snow in all recorded history. North America has the most snowcover in 50 years, with places like Wisconsin the highest since record-keeping began. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile.

Evidence has been supplanted by hard scientific fact. All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA's GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously.

As shown by the graph, global warming is now over.

  7. It is true that global average temperatures have not increased for eight years.

NASA had some earlier numbers, but they turned out to be false.  By sheer coincidence, the person in charge of crunching those numbers supported global warming theory.
