Question:

Anthropogenic global warming and divine intervention?

I found these two statements in the past few questions posted today.-

“I also believe in god and he strictly said that he would not flood the earth again.”

and

“Mother nature & GOD control what is going to happen to this world...and man is a fool if he thinks he can change any of it.”

That made my wonder. Are there people here who actually believe that their god, no matter who he, she, it or they are will save the planet from man’s damage to the planet?

Is this one of the reasons some refuse to accept the science of global warming?

  1. I'm pretty sure that believing in God or believing in Al Gore doesn't change what happens to the earth, just proves every day that man has no effect on the climate.

We couldn't damage this planet if we tried.  Natural disasters like volcanoes cause more pollution than humans have ever caused in thousands of years.  And animals pollute more than humans by far.  At least we clean up after ourselves.  I've never seen an animal do that.

I guess the AGW evangelists would blame animals if they could find a way to tax them and restrict their freedoms.

If you believe in AGW then that's your religion.  Your religion might not agree with other religions, but we have freedom of religion and we all respect your freedom to believe in whatever you want to believe in.

  2. Do you know story of the man of faith drowning in the water ? a ferry boat came by and he refused help stating that God will rescue him... same deal as when the cargo went by... and finally a canoe...  he ultimately died. Finally, he died and asked God why he did rescue him... and then God explained that he tried 3x times but everytime this man would not accept help.

When you have faith, it helps having studied science to realize that not every single thing happening is a direct intervention of God. Indeed laws of physics almost always apply meaning that the creator does not change them.

A Christian with knowledge would realize that the PROBLEM EMERGES AT A TIME AND AT A PACE STRICTLY COMPATIBLE WITH OUR POSSIBILITIES... knowing the probabilities for this to happen, I see how well the universe has been created and which challenge is set to us.

  3. Yes, every so often we get people making this 'god said he wouldn't flood the Earth again' or 'God controls the weather, not man' type of argument.

This is generally the same subset of people who believe in Creationism over evolution, but in the case of global warming I think it's a very small percentage.

  4. Why not?  No one can predict the future, yet people actually believe they know what the temperatures will be 50 years from now.  Since there is no mathematical proof to back up what they say, they must be relying solely on faith. This is no different than those that read religious scripture and believe they know exactly what god is going to do 50 years from now.

This is why all science should use the objective standard.  There is no scientific basis for a consensus.

  5. You better believe it.

    Underlying all these ideas

    - Man is too insignificant to effect the environment

    - Man has insufficient knowledge to predict outcomes

    - No matter what we do the outcome is predetermined

is the theistic precept that man was put on earth as an instrument of God.

    - We effect the environment every minute of every day.

    - We created the situation with the predictive power of science.

    - As a practical matter (philosophy and cosmology aside) nothing is predetermined.

No one is going to come down and save us.

It's up to us to accept responsibility for what we have done / are doing.  We created it.  It stands to reason we can undo it.

I prefer agnosticism and accepting responsibility.

  6. If a God is behind weather and climate it then he's pretty indiscriminate in who he hands out floods, droughts, tornado's and hurricanes to isn't he?

Being devout or not doesn't seem to count for much when one strikes.

  7. Made "my" wonder"? Man I've got to get my eyes checked

lol at the very least I like your sense of humour.

I believe in God,and our responsibility to the earth we live on.
