i need a good reference site that can tell me how anthropologists and archaeologists investigate an ancient ruin or finding?

You could look at the Society for American Archaeology's webpage, www.saa.org, or the Society for Historical Archaeology, www.sha.org.  Also try www.catalhoyuk.com.  It is specific to one site in Turkey, but it'll give you a good idea of the various things archaeologists do at a site.
