This medallion was given to my Grandfather around 30 years ago. He is a Professor Emeritus of History at Central State University, and he cannot figure out what this is, due to the "needle in a haystack" circumstances. It remarkably survived a fire that destroyed an entire house and everything around it, including the walnut box it was stored in. Any comments, points-of-contact, suggestions, or responses are greatly appreciated. Thank you for your collective time and consideration in this matter!

  1. This may not be a very old or primitive item.  Look carefully at the clasp.

The image itself is not one usually stylized by any culture, but is very similar to a very large number of locations.  The type of chain (hand-made or machine made) and the exact alloy of metal used might tell you more.

I would suggest first going to an competent dealer in antique jewelry to start.  You might find one online if you do not live in a large city.  Depending upon what you find out there, a museum curator (which museum based upon the dealer) should be able to identify the piece or at least give you a good guess.

  2. This is an African amulet. It has power to set a house on fire. Reason : Spell cast on it.
