Anthropology anyone?

I'm in gr 11 and I'm really starting to feel the pressure about figuring out what I want to be in life. I LOVE history and I'm really good in the sciences (chemistry then biology then physics). I saw a show (a documentary, NOT like Tomb Raider or Bones or anything like that) that really got me thinking about anthropology and archaeology and things like that. I've done a little research and I realize jobs are hard to come by, and when you do get one they don't pay that much, but I find that area of study absolutley fascinating and I've always had a love for that. I guess what I'm asking is, does anyone think its really worth pursuing this, or should I give up the dream and get a practical job with good pay? I've always loved history, and thought of travel to the UK or Ireland very intriguing. I'd really like some advice and suggestions, maybe different jobs in that field or schools to look into, or other jobs that could give the means of travel during free time (b/c good pay) instead.

  1. Find the nearest University to you, with an Antrhopology Department, and volunteer to do some field work for them this summer!

  2. I have wanted to be an anthropologist since I was 12 years old. I am now 23 and  just graduated from college with a BA in sociology with a concentration in anthropology.  I going to grad school to obtain a masters in physical anthropology. I wanted to be a forensic or medical anthropologist. You're right, jobs can be hard to come by (you will almost definitely have to get at least a masters), but if you love the subject I say go for it.  I have learned so much and met so many interesting people that even if I weren't going to further my education, I would still have studied anthropology. My experience was amazing. I suggest that you talk with an anthropology professor at a university or college.  Also, when I was in high school I bought the book Great Jobs for Anthropology Majors by Blythe Camenson, it's full of info about different career paths, salaries, website, etc. Hope this help. Good luck!

  3. I think exactly like you. I love history, archaeology, and I really have a passion for being a successful archaeologist. When I found out that it's hard to get a good job and the pay wasn't great it kinda got me down. Archaeology has been my dream job for a few years now. I thought about other careers, but frankly there weren't any that i thought i had more passion for and could be more happier in than archaeology. Then I stumbled on this site and it actually encouraged me to pursue my dreams and reassured me. I'm graduating this year from hs and majoring in anthropology emphasis on archaeology next year. So I say if you really love history and anthropology then go for it! money shouldn't be an issue as long as your happy.

  4. It comes down to what you believe about money.  If your into lots of money then this may not be the profession for you depending on what field of Anthropology you get into, forensics for example pays well.

If your interested in the search for answers then this may be the place for you.  There are loads of unanswered and even unexplored questions that exist.

Do what you love, your career should not be a burden.
