Why don't you try looking at the chest beating of apes? Have you ever seen the New Zealand Haka?  The Maori warriors from NZ used to smack their chests as a threat to their enemies. There are no, and have never been any sort of native primate in New Zealand. So why do they both do that? See why the Maori do it, and maybe the reasoning would be the same. Check it out.

What is it that you don't understand about this assignment, exactly?

You're being asked to pick a trait that primates have, and explain how it might have evolved.

So, reread about the various kinds of traits that primates have, and think about how they may have evolved (come into being).

Under what circumstances would the trait make for more successful survival or reproduction?

Then pick one that you feel you can explain, and describe and explain it.

The assignment seems clear.

The trick is to start backwards, by choosing something you feel you could explain.
