I'm having some trouble prepping for my anthro final. I can't seem to get a grasp of these concepts. What are the similarities and differences between reciprocal and distributive exchange. My textbook isn't much help. Any info would be great! thanks!

  1. Jon said it well, but usually in redistributive exchange, ppl dont just give away their surplus but to a central authority, it is taken from them (tax system would be an example).  They usually will also get some benefits but who will get what will be decided by the central authority.

Reciprocal means informal (non contractual) t*t for tat among people who are either relatives or friends.

  2. reciprocal is like when you need some sugar and you go the neighbors house and borrow some sugar. then the next week they need some eggs so you give them some eggs. everybody helps out those who need it if they have it to give. distributive is when everybody gives their excess to a central authority (chief, king, etc) and that authority then distributes it as they deem fit.
