someone I know who has worked for some big companies for a long time told me that most companies will be reluctant to hire you if you are in ur 40s or older despite there're law against age discrimination. But I am 42 & back in school to get my first bachelor's in computer engineering. Should I just drop out now if there's no hope for me being hired after I graduate?

  1. sounds like you waisted everyones time by going to school so late in time.

  2. Maybe the big companies, the Fortune 500 companies, but  who wants to work for them anyway.  Go for a small company, they could not care what your age is, all they care about if what you can do for them.

Drop out??? Never!!!  In 4 years, you will be 46., You'll still be 46 whether or not you get that degree.

  3. The younger you look the better chance you have...dye your hair if needed. Get your degree and teach computer science in public school or community college. Work in the public sector is far more subject to scrutiny whereas  private sector employment can hide discriminatory practices more easily.

  4. No! Don't drop out. The answer to your question is, yes, companies do discriminate But, you can't prove it most of the time. The good news is depending on where you live, or want to live, you will be hired by someone! Being employed in  something you love, is what it is all about. You may not get the big corp. job with microsoft, sorry. But you could just as easily get a job with a good company and earn a little less than being filthy rich, and love what you do. That is what is most important. Keep going.

  5. Check out the book "What Color is Your Parachute"

There are companies that will hire you because you are over 40.

  6. no you shouldn you deserve kudos for doing what u r

  7. Don't drop out; but, don't expect to get an offer from a large American company either.  Age discrimination is America's dirty little secret.

Find the network groups in IT and join them now.

If you have a job with a major corporation, stick with it and try to transfer to IT after you graduate.

If you are unemployed, consider a bad job with a good company now, when you get the degree, transfer.

Good luck - age discrimination rots, but it is a fact of life in America.
