What anti-depressant can I take that won't either make me gain weight or make me sick to my stomach. Please help. I really need to be on something because I can't function without some kind of medication.

  1. Have you discussed this with a dr?   Do you really need  it or just THINK you really need it?

  2. Ones that "supposedly" do not cause weight gain include:

Effexor XR and Cymbalta and Lexapro

But warning, Effexor XR is extrememly diffifult coming off.  It is known to have some of the worst withdrawl symptoms (next to Paxil)

  3. Hi

I am on antidepreesants at this monent .

Doc has me on Fluoxitine.it does not make you gain weight or up set your stomach. The side effects are mild in the beging you might get a slight headache but it goes away if you keep taking them.

When prozak lost its patten it became fluoxitine.

They come in 10 mg and20mg.

Good Luck they work and you can function.

  4. I can understand your concerns.

The choice of which anti-depressant to try next, is really something you need to leave up to an expert - your Psychiatrist.

Everyone responds a little differently to each medication, positives and negatives included.  Your psychiatrist has gone to trainings and keeps abreast of pharmaceuticals' positive and negative findings.

It really is not the wisest thing for you to choose which one to try next.

From experience, I will say that Zoloft has worked well, only once the very first week was I sick to my stomach.  I have had great results concerning my alleviation of depression over the past number of years.

Weight gain seems to be less than 5lbs. per year - without exercise.

Note:  I just went to my own Dr, asking if the Zoloft was cause for my wt. gains.  He actually looked at me and said "No, recent findings have found that it is impossible to lose weight if you are not sleeping well through the night"   Many depressed people (or parents of kids)  are unable to get a quality and quantity of sleep required for health.

-- So, what I am suggesting is that you first address the depression and get it under control (my Dr says that averages 6-18 months) for people to re-start their body's chemistry.    And, that is for most people.   It is really fewer of us who are incapable of producing what we need, who must continually supplement with anti-depressants over the long term.

  5. Try some Mary Jane. It won't make you sick to your stomach. It might make you gain a lil weight though.....

  6. I suggest that you check out those above at http://www.drugs.com/ and http://www.rxlist.com/ and http://crazymeds.us/ and http://www.askapatient.com/

Personally, I'd stick with St.John's wort, taken with a meal, even though it may take longer to become effective than antidepressants, side effects are rare and generally mild, causes no weight problems, or sleep problems, and it carries no risk of suicide, (read the warnings on the label, or enclosures!)homicide, or aberrant behaviour.
