Question:

Anti depression medication for a minor?

I am 17 years old and I plan on going to the doctor soon to be prescribed an anti depression medication. The thing is I have read on numerous medication websites that their medicine is only approved for ages 18 and over. I am trying to find one that is approved for minors as well and has a symptom of weight LOSS instead of weight gain.

Does anyone know of any?

  1. Zoloft?

  2. Why don't you trust your doc to select the right medication for you. Dont worry, there are a few antidepressants which can be prescribed to under 18. Prozac is one such medicine. Weight loss or gain is not a definitive side effect and a medicine that causes weight gain in one individual can lead to weight loss in another. so its not simple to predict how things might turn for u.

  3. I was diagnosed with depression when I was 13 years old. My doctor put me on Lexapro® 10-mg. This not only helped with the depression, but also seemed to boost my confidence!

I never had weight problems on Lexapro, and if I remember correctly I actually lost about 5lbs. (I weighed about 105 before taking it).

I am now 18 and no longer needing the Lexapro! I was on it up until 2 years ago, and am doing much better now (adolescents was difficult for me...).

I am not sure if this would be the right medication for you. That is something that you and your doctor would need to discuss, but I do know that it worked really well for me!

Here is the link for the official site. Hope this helps!

  4. Antidepressants (Zoloft specifically) made me lose my appetite entirely. I actually went 4 days straight with absolutely no food. They also made my depression FAR worse. I don't recommend taking antidepressants at all (nor do I feel religion is the answer). Antidepressants will not help you. There is no pills out there that will make your life any better, since they don't do anything to help whatever is causing your depression.

Instead of antidepressants, try finding a hobby. Look for ways to improve the quality of your life. Spending time with friends, sports (if you're into them), pets, anything. Finding things to do that you enjoy is the best treatment for depression. Being happy is the only cure for depression, and no pills can create happiness (no comments from substance abusers, please).

If weight loss is a concern, try getting some exercise and starting a healthy diet routine. Both are very good for mental health, and neither have nasty side effects like antidepressants.

Like with every medical condition in the world, you need to treat the cause, not the symptoms.

  5. Plenty of minors are on anti depressants

i think they mean like kids. Its a weight thing

I dont think theres one anti depressant that has weight loss as a side effect.

Just be careful what you eat! and exercise!

  6. I took Zoloft @ 17 but I was almost 18. It also had a side effect of some weight loss for me. It has horrible sexual side effects though. Just my exp.

  7. What do you have to be depressed about, you have your whole life ahead of you, try focusing on you. do things you like to do or try something new.as far as losing weight, just check out you local gym, they will help. but depression, you are too young for that. find you a good friend and just chill for a bit. better yet talk to your parents. and there is one more thing talk to god he has a great answer for you, read your bible. but whatever you do don't lose focus. you do not need medicine, just god and a good true friend someone you can count. but count on jesus he will never let you down, and best of all you can tell him something and it won't get back to anyone, you know what iam saying. so think about that for a while okay and good luck, and god bless you.
