Why do you think we need a degree to teach our kids? Are we teaching 3 or 33? Do you think teachers are specialist in what they teach? What is it that makes you think we need the crowd control techniques and lesson planning skills?

  1. I think that as long as the kids learn the correct information, and the right information they need to go on to college or start a career, it shouldn't matter where or how they are taught it. More power to you!

  2. I'm sure what i have to say has been said but honestly homeschooling truly keeps children from learning.

    no interactions

    no friends

    lonliness

believe me i've had homeschooled friends and no matter how "social" they are at church and clubs they miss out on daily interactions with peers, competitiveness, advanced placement and honors classes and are caged and alone.  i know whatever i say will fall on deaf ears as i know many people who homeschool are ignorant and believe that sheltering their children will protect them.

    it wont.

  3. Once again, I ask, if teachers are so highly qualified, why were my kids failing in school?  If I'm so insufficiently qualified, why are my kids now two whole grade levels ahead?  My son's "teacher" told him to color the states in our country, each with a different color.  We're Canadian, for Pete's sake!  My daughter's teacher couldn't tell her where the Sahara Desert is.  I speak, read and write English, French, Spanish and Latin.  I actually understand Algebra and I do complex word problems as a past time.  I read upwards of sixty books a year.  I only have a high school diploma.  I'm not trying to boast.  I'm just making the point that a certificate does not a teacher make.  Having a teacher's certificate does not indicate that you are good at what you do.

  4. At a guess:

    1) they know little to nothing about education, not schooling, EDUCATION and what does and doesn't work

    2) they know little to nothing about what a teaching degree entails

    3) they've swallowed the lies put out by teaching unions and others who make their money off the school system

  5. "Don't bring up the tired old socialization myth! It's boring and proven wrong so many times over!"

That's funny. It's like George Bush saying "The jury's still out on evolution!"

I think the social part is the worst part of homeschooling. I think homeschooling gives people great educations.

And I don't necessarily mean socialization. It's making, and having friends that I think is the bad part of homeschooling.

Cause I'm very social and outgoing. I just have no friends. You can be as social and as outgoing as you want, but I think it's easier to make friends (When you're a teenager) in high school.

  6. I am all for you Mom, you keep going on strong for your kids, our country needs more Mom's like you. We do need to educate the masses. They are so institutionalized. They cannot do anything even think for themselves very well because they themselves are so caught up in the system. They have bought the lie and do not have insight into the truth and what they are even capable of.

My Mother in 1962 was told by my teacher that she could not help me with my "new math"  that she would just confuse me and that she should get a tutor and Mom could not get a tutor because it was too expensive...so I never got any help from anyone..and my Mom was a straight A student and took Latin,Algebra,Trig, all solid subjects. Mom graduated one year early from High School with honors, yet she was told she was too stupid to help and teach her own daughter. She bought the lie and all my life I have struggled with math because every year they changed what they wanted to do in public school. Just look at the record of how the school system taught math from 1960 - present.

I home-schooled my own two children all the way through high school. I took them out of public school at the end of 2nd grade. They both are well adjusted, my daughter has graduated from college and my son has been working since he was 15 and graduated Valedictorian of his training class of where he works. He is very mature for a 21 year old and very sweet and helpful to his Dad and I.

As I home-schooled my goal was that I have his heart and that he would be a man that loved God and his fellow man. His sister has gone to a Bible College and graduated and now works as a Cosmetologist and has strong values and is very well adjusted.

I learned so much while home-schooling, but the best thing was I missed out on the rebellious time that kids go through with there parents, they seemed to just breeze through all that and they were kind and happy. Of course they were in a good church and always went to Sunday School and we read the Book of Proverbs often and memorized lots of Bible verses.

My kids have to find their own way now that they are older and they have tested things on their own since they are older but they have come back to the solid way they were raised and they are thankful for parents that took the time to give them their best.

Home-schooling takes time and love. There is no sending them home at the end of the day. They are home to stay.

There are so many good materials, and very good books, testing supplies, support groups. There are private Christian Schools if you can afford them, which was not the case for us, but I am so happy I did it on my own with God's help.

  7. Have you ever heard the saying "It's like the blind leading the blind"? Effective learning is more than just what you get out of books, and if the person teaching doesn't have any more skill than the ability to read then they aren't going to be teaching them anything more than they could simply get on their own. Which isn't sufficient to make it in the world.

Teachers are required to be versed in the subjects they are teaching at the level they are to be taught. They are also instructed in ways in which these might be taught to the children of those levels whereas those children might best grasp what is being taught.

If the person instructing these children doesn't have any more knowledge than what the children themselves will be obtaining from the books and other material to be imparted upon the child, then they aren't teaching the child. They are simply parroting what they have read. They are the blind leading the blind.

One might not need a degree to teach, but they need a lot more than just being able to read a lesson plan. If you think that anyone who can just read and follow a lesson plan is qualified to effectively teach anyone at all, then you are sorely mistaken. And your degradation and stereotyping of sports teachers is appalling. I sincerely hope you aren't teaching your children to think in this manner.

  8. Exactly.

Having gone to a two year charter school, I've been kind of spoiled and know that public schools are not the best way to educate your child. It's easy and convenient, and h**l, our taxes pay for it, so we might as well, seems to be the attitude. I choose homeschooling because public schools were NOT working for my children. The teacher for one of my kids (I had four in school at the time) TOLD me that they are never taught how to teach different children, there is one semester class in which they cover all learning differences (gifted OR slow), and almost always the suggestion is to refer them to a 'learning specialist'.

Having attended classes to get my teacher's certificate (quit as a waste of time) I can assure people that a large majority of the classes are completely pointless outside of crowd control and giving tests. You aren't taught any academic material, you are taught how to teach what is given to you in terms of curriculum (ie how to read a manual and present information)

I did have a few good high school teachers, and I've met some since then, but nothing that makes me just want to sign over my children's rights and freedom to have them learn.

And yes, the socialization myth is TIRED and boring. Even our weekends are overbooked with all the friends and family we choose to visit with. Dh was just saying how thankful he was that today was memorial day, after our worship service of thanks, we'll have the day to just our family so that we can get caught up on laundry and housecleaning (strike that, my oldest's friend just walked in the door, eh, he's almost family anyway)

  9. well, when people are home schooled, usually they dont get that socail aspect that alows them to cowaperate with people in there life later on, especally in offices, 2 is that there is no real standard for teach were as in a public school people have to learn the same content and everone is at the same lvl, because people who are home schooled some times are because the parents cant afford school, so they dont really learn what they are sopposed to know

  10. You need a degree because most teachers with degrees are only barely capable of teaching, let alone the mass of moronic robots called humans. It's similar to Darwin (if your parents taught you that). A bigger comunity (such as Yahoo!Answers) creates more ideas that can be presented, reflected upon, and ultimately judged. So the best ideas prevail, and more ideas are present in a larger community. Degrees allow your child to earn a diploma of their own, eventually, which you would otherwise be unliscensed to give.

While homeschooled children get more personal attention, most parents simply do not have the knowledge required to teach on par. I believe that Mr. Foxworthy used to host a gameshow called, "Are You Smarter than a Fifth-Grader?".

Teachers aren't necessarily specialists. Elementary school teachers need to teach simple basics of everything. But higher level teachers are more specialized. That is why most teachers above the middle school level can only teach a few closely related subjects. Look at other teachers, such as musicians. They had better be specialists. Personally, I find myself to be my most effective teacher, with the internet as my textbook. But most students aren't as motivated.

You don't need to learn crowd control techniques, but that sounds useful to me. Even if you don't use it with your "students", you never know when that might come in handy. Lesson planning is important for organization, to keep track of what you need to teach. Planning is also important, because you will probably have to report to your local public school, and your child will robably be required to pass certain examinations.

You probably would expect a rant about social life and interaction here, but you're on the internet, so you should know better than to expect anyone with any sort of actual social skills here.

  13. Are you just posting this because you are looking for an argument? Are you honestly so ignorant to believe teachers only

know crowd control and lesson planning? Teachers have four years of college. Based on your sentence structure you do not.

I am not a teacher. I am a medical professional. I would also like to address why you are asking us ...."Are we teaching 3 or 33?" If you don't know how many you are "teaching," you definitely should turn your poor little kiddies over to the wisdom and guidance of a professional.
