Anti submarining seats?

Have seen these detail on a car I am looking to purchase any idea what it means

  1. I'm pretty certain that all vehicles sold in the UK for the past fifteen or twenty years have anti submarine seats to comply with EU regulations.


  2. It's not actually the seat but a special seat belt assembly that stops you slipping under the belt in an accident.

    Probably not a great idea unless you want to drive like a loon because it's quite restricitve.


  3. Submarining in this context means that in an accident you slide down and out of the harness. This can happen with standard 3point and 4 point harnesses. I have heard of it happening in aviation accidents, though I suspect it is rare in normal car (auto for Americans reading this) accidents other than child passengers. A 5 point harness prevents this as there is a strap from the crotch to the waistbelt
