Anti-venon would you use it?

Ok, here is a head stratcher for vegans out there that dont use any animal products at all. Say you were bitten by a snake and was taken to hospital, the only way to save your life was to use antivenom made from snakes and then horses/goats etc. Would you accept it.

And this is a true senario, snakes can bite you and antivenom is a product of snake venom and horses imune systems.

  1. For those who say that their life is not more important than a snake's life, so they would not use the anti-venom: I'm certainly not arguing with you, but I am curious to know if your answer would be the same if it was your child, rather than yourself, that had been bitten by the snake.

  2. It is difficult to give a definite answer when the situation has not actually taken place. I remember my sister-in-law who always said "I would definitely have a natural delivery! No pain meds or anything!!" Four hours into labor, she was screaming for pain killers or just anything that would knock her out.  It would be different for everybody.

For myself, I guess, if I am  gasping for breath and I feel my  limbs going numb and eyes are bleeding, being a vegan would be the last thing on my quickly-losing-consciousness mind. But that's me and I am a vegetarian, not a vegan.

  3. How is this a "head stratcher"???

Why would I die to prove how "vegan" I am. You have once again failed to understand what veganism is about.

I am more important than a snake or a horse so why would I die just to protest their being bothered. Some people may wish that there were other methods of acquiring anti-venom but no sane person wants production of anti-venom to stop no matter how many snakes or horses are used to do so.

  4. I'm a vegan and I think if I had to save my life I would let them do it just that once.

  5. No, i can honestly say i wouldn't do it. Why is my life more important?

  6. Absolutely. I am not willing to die for an animal. There are very few people I know that I am willing to die for, let alone an animal that attacked me. If that makes me a bad vegan, then I'm a bad vegan. :/

  7. Hopefully, my dear antivegan lover of hypotheticals, I will never be in the position to need an antivenin.

  8. Veganism requires one's best efforts at not harming animals, but it doesn't require martyrdom.  Vegans without other options take life-saving medications all the time and all were tested on animals.  I avoid foods, fabrics and consumer goods with animal ingredients because I don't *need* them and there is always a suitable alternative.  However, if there is no suitable alternative to antivenom, I'm not obliged to die for my beliefs.

  9. I'm vegan and it's not a head-scratcher at all.

Being vegan is means doing the best you can and all you can to minimise your contribution to animal suffering and exploitation. It does not mean being a martyr, and sacrificing your life is not required.

Yes, I would accept anti-venom without hesitation, and so would any sane person.  Opting to die instead would be psychotic, not vegan.
