  1. Free spyware programs to download are Spybot S&D, SuperAntiSpyware, Ad-Aware 2007 and AVG. Most popular free antivirus programs are AVG Anti-Virus, Avira AntiVir , Avast  etc. Check out http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-sAFtLsc8e... for more details.

  2. Hi I would absolutely 100% recommend this, just so you know it got an award for being one of the most popular downloads on CNET's Download.com, (hope this means something to you. It't the most secure dowload website on the net). I would recommend the free version for your standard home computer. It is Called AVG FREE 8.0 here's a link for the site so you can check it out and download it. Just to sell it to you a bit more!, it will update itself EVERY DAY and is more secure and sufficient than a Nortan Internet Security Package and with this new 8.0 version it will tell you if a link for a Google or Yahoo or Live search is safe here's the link http://free.avg.com/. By the Way i don't even work for AVG. LOL!

  3. well, the best way to go is Norton internet security( like $60), but if u wanna go free, ur gunna need more than one. A good combo is AVG 8, ThreatFire, PC Tools Firewall Plus, and SpyBot Search & Destroy. they wont slow ur computer down, and they give you pretty good overall protection (for being free!!). But i still recomend Norton Internet security (dont buy 360, its a waste, stick with inernet security)

  4. If you want a free anti-virus program, Avast has a higher detection rate than AVG and is easier to use/less intrusive.  I've used both (not at the same time--do not run two anti-virus programs at once!), and can say that Avast has caught more than AVG and updates without bugging me.  The only thing with Avast is that you have to plug in a registration key, but it's free and easy.

Here's a forum where people discuss their experiences with the above as well as Bitdefender, PCTools, Norton, etc.:

Firewalls are a bit trickier, because there are so many, and ratings change every year.  From personal experience, ZoneAlarm has messed up my computer twice.  The Sunbelt Personal Firewall wouldn't install in my computer, and while it was the top-rated one for 2006, it is now considered not too good.  Comodo gets a five-star rating from the CNET download site, but if you read the user experiences, it looks like a nightmare:

I used it for two weeks and may reinstall it, but there are A LOT of popups, and half the time you don't know what they are.  I got one for TransferAgent, so I clicked on it to see what it was.  After that, Comodo blocked automatic updates even though it was on my safe list.

If you are willing to pay, then according to computer gurus I know and online ratings, the best anti-virus is NOD32 and the best firewall is the paid version of Online Armor.

  5. Avira free for home personal use has a very high rate of detection of about 97.6%.  Higher then Kasperksy Russia that you have to purchase,  http://www.free-av.com/

Avast free for home personal use has background scanner, rootkit detector and daily updates.

  7. First of all don't EVER EVER EVER download Norton ANYTHING on your computer. Once it installs you can't get it off. Anyway, the best anti virus programs would be Kaspersky, AVG, or Bitdefender. (in my opinion)
