Does anyone know why you shouldn't take antiacids (like Tums) while on the antibiotic Ciprofloxacin?

  1. The ciprofloxacin molecule can complex with the metal ions commonly found in most antacids (calcium, aluminum, magnesium, etc.). This actually prevents the drug from being absorbed properly, limiting its effectiveness. The same holds true if you take it with things like milk or calcium-fortified juices, so be careful with those as well.
