Anticipation increases as son of Rachel Alexandra and Curlin will be named at Saratoga
The first foal of 2009 Horse of the Year, Rachel Alexandra, by the 2007 and 2008 Horse of the Year, Curlin, will be named at Saratoga Race Course on 27 July, 2012.
The name was selected by the fans of these brilliant runners, which they submitted on Valentine’s Day, as the entries kept on coming and soared up to 6,500.
With so many names to choose from, the most popular name was chosen and, it was drawn on 23rd July, 2012, by Barbara Banke, owner of Stonestreet Farm.
Banke was extremely excited about the enthusiasm that the fans showed, as she stated to the press:
“Even in retirement the love and affection shown to Curlin and Rachel Alexandra continues to amaze us. We feel the name the fans selected carries on the legacy of these two amazing athletes,” Banke commented. “We picked Saratoga to make our announcement
because of the deeply ingrained histories of both parents and NYRA’s (New York Racing Association’s) wonderful fans.”
The name of this colt will be revealed by Barbara Banke on 27th July, 2012, at the Saratoga racecourse in a special ceremony after the $100,000 Curlin Stakes takes place.
The colt, who has been nicknamed ‘Taco’ will have the event held in his honour as it has been dubbed “A Toast to Taco’s Official Name."
Such is the popularity of this colt, and his naming ceremony that New York Racing Association has been promoting it on Facebook, and representatives of Stonestreet will distribute vouchers for free drinks during the ceremony.
The hype revolving this event and this colt is definitely not groundless, as he was whelped to two of the most popular, skilful and talented runners.
Curlin, son of Smart Strike, out of mare Sherriff's Deputy, has a shining record, since he was named Horse of the Year in 2007 and 2008.
The Kentucky bred runner, who is now retired to Will Farish’s Lane’s End Farm at Kentucky, won the Grade 1 Preakness and Breeder’s Cup Classic in 2007, and went on to win the Grade 1 Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup, and the Jockey Club Gold Cup
Invitational.
Rachel Alexandra was the first female to notch the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes and the first filly to win the Preakness Stakes in 85 years.
