Hello. I Am going to go to a doctor soon. I struggle with an eating disorder, really bad depression, anxiety. I never wanted to take antidepressants before but things are getting out of hand- I thought maybe I will try.

My question is: How DO they make you feel? What is the change like? Do you really make you feel different? Explain it to me, if you can. Thanks :)

  1. Really it should just alevieate the depression and the anxiety.  If it makes you feel different other then the no longer feeling depressed and anxious, they you probably are on the wrong one for you.  They DO NOT make you emotionaly flat (depression is d**n good at doing that though) as long as you are on the right one.  They are not "happy pills" so dont just make you super happy all the time.  They make you able to feel things normally, with out the depression on top of every thing.

  2. You feel not depressed its not like you can notice i never noticed but i think other people around you can notice. It's just kinda a lifter upper and like when i take them its just like you don't get so done up over things and your less nervous and like things don't bother me like they used to. But they really do make a difference. It's just kinda something to help you when your going through a rough time.

  3. Well I can tell you from personal experience that once I started taking anti-depressants I felt like a huge weight had been lifted off of me. I always had all these negative feelings like "you're a horrible person" "you don't deserve a good life" "you'll never be happy" and I never felt optimistic. Then when I started taking Effexor XR, I started to get an idea of what "normal" felt like. Then as I kept taking it, I felt even better. I started to feel less afraid of life and more eager to live it.

Tons of people told me not to take them. But I knew there had to be something out there that would help. There is something wrong with our brains and we don't produce the right chemicals to keep us feeling normal. My doctor put it this way, if you had diabetes, you would take insulin right? Of course you would, because not doing so would make you sick and affect your quality of life. Well this depression you're going through it doing the same thing.

That being said, the medicines don't come without side effects. Some have more than others, and there's always a risk. But for me and millions of other people suffering from anxiety and depression, it was worth the risk. Just make sure that you talk to your doctor about all of your symptoms and all of your concerns and they'll be able to come up with the right med for you.

    Good luck!

  4. I have noticed that antidepressants have helped me to be able to think more clearly.  Antidepressants have helped me to be more receptive to therapy because of being able to think more clearly.  My mood is more stable than it was without antidepressants.  I do not feel flat like some people say.  I just don't have the same intensity of depression that I once did.  Give it a try.  I hope you will be feeling better soon.

  5. First, you and your doctor have to find the correct medication and dosing for you.

There are side effects with all the antidepressants.  Everything from weird dreams, to sexual dysfunction.

After the medication gets into your system though, you will notice such a huge change.  I am on Prozac and absolutely love it.  It makes me feel better, more outgoing, self confident, etc.

Most of the side efffects go away after the medication is in your system.

  7. I took an antidepressant for a week and felt worse. So I talked to my doctor and swithced to another one. I felt much better after a few weeks. It is really hard to describe, because everyone is different. But I feel much more in control of my feelings. Before antidepressants, I would have described myself as overwhelmed. I was sad, even though I had every reason to be be happy (a great family, a job I like, good health) I am much happier now.

I was afraid after my first bad experience, but I knew I needed help.

They aren't going to change your personality, it will be like you have your old self back. Good luck!

  8. In theory they would make you feel content. Contrary to what many religious zealots would have you believe personality is in direct relation to chemicals produced within the brain. Your anxiety comes from a chemical imbalance which the antidepressants seek the reprimand. I have never been on antidepressants but do know how they work, so just know that it is not you and medication is really the only answer.
