Question:

Antidepressants and paranoia?

Is this a side effect?

I'm on Cymbalta.

I've started having REALLY irrational thoughts go through my head... not that I act on them or anything, but why??

Example 1: Having a substance near me that is potentially and quite likely to be really poisonous and having the urge to drink it?

Example 2: Being really paranoid that I'm being followed by the devil or something demonic (I KNOW this sounds completely wacko, I think the same thing, but I can't help having the thoughts fly through my head sometimes even when I rationalise them later)

I have depression and anxiety attacks and am on antidepressants (obviously) and AM going to therapy (don't worry about that) and have been suicidal recently.

Is this just a side effect mixing with the emotional state I'm in? Or what? Any help?

Thanks.

  1. I think you are having side effects from the Cymbalta. You need to call your doctor right away and tell him what is going on. I suggest you go off the Cymbalta (as long as your doctor says you can) and try something else. Zoloft has been around for a long time with good results for a lot of people without the nasty side effects. Cymbalta is a fairly new medicine and I don't think the doctors know what all the potential side effects can be yet. Please call your doctor ASAP.

  2. ya possibly.  I guess it depends on how long you have been on the meds?  Def consult your doctor.  Prozac is good if you're looking for a change

  3. I'd call your doctor.  Everything is a matter of degree, but if your impulse control is a little lacking and your paranoia factor is amped up, especially with a tad bit of a delusional quality... it's time to call the doc.  That's not how antidepressants are supposed to work.  Talking this over with your therapist is a good idea, too.

Btw, I've been to wacko.  You're a ways from there, but if you journey down this road a lot longer, you may become a member of the club.
