Question:

Antidepressants make me want to drink alone less?

Before starting antidepressants... I used to drink alone to get drunk a lot, to a point where it worried me. Then I went on Effexor XR for a little while, and am now on Lexapro... and I just don't feel like I can drink as much as I used to, or want to. I just don't see the point anymore. Is this normal? I'd rather just take the clonazepam that was prescribed to me and go to sleep.

  1. Alcohol is something that shouldn't be taken with antidepressents.  It can be very bad for you.

  2. Well, it seems as if the drugs are doing some good, doesn't it?  Drinking alone is a sign of depression and if you aren't wanting to do it as often and are seeing the pointlessness of it, the antidepressants are doing their job.  Keep taking them and good luck!!

  3. Alcohol is a depressant. Often drinkers do not realize they are down or depressed because of drinking.  While hungover you may have negative feelings and irrational thoughts and make evaluations such as 'life sucks', but that's just the hangover talking.

A friend of a friend was so down for so long her doctor suggested shock treatment. Instead, she quit drinking.  After a while, feeling better, she was able to enjoy a drink every now and then.

If you get out of the trap of habitual drinking you might be able to stop taking anti-depressants. Clear your head and enjoy life without chemicals.

  4. You shouldn't be drinking at all on antidepressants.
