Question:

Antique title laws in NC?

I'm thinking of buying a mid-60's car to restore from someone in Maryland. He says there is no title, but will provide a notarized bill of sale.

Anyone know if I can register this car after I finish the work to it with a bill of sale in NC?

Or should I walk away from this deal?

Thanks

  1. Go to the place where you do your car registry and ask them.  Or the court house?  or call a lawyer?

  2. If it's mid sixties you're probably ok with just the bill of sale.  NC considers a vehicle to be an antique at 35 years. In NC we have regular DMV and contract DMV offices.  I bought an antique fire truck out of PA and the regular DMV wanted an inspector to look it over and make me jump through several hoops before they would issue a tag.  The DMV contract office issued me a tag within minutes of my arrival with a check book and pen.  Bottom line deal with someone who makes money when they sell you something not a state employee who couldn't care less.

One other thing,  as long as you have the state issued antique tag in the vehicle you can use a tag issued the year your car was made.

Good luck and enjoy your new car.

  3. The bill of sale will work just fine at the worst of it you may have to get a salvage title from the dmv have done this here and in durham and have never had a problem and rebuilt many cars from junk yards most with out any paper work.
