I've tested and used about a dozen products.

A small, free and generally effective program is Spybot Search and Destroy.

If you want a free online scanner try Housecall.

For difficult problems I recommend a 30 day Kaspersky Trial.

Kaspersky has a GREAT feature.  It will help you make a SYSTEM RESCUE CD.

Unfortunately I can't recommend either Avast or Panda.

Well, Avast is free, and consistently scores well in independent reviews. Panda is not useless, but it doesn't do anything amazing that would warrant paying for it.

With Avast and AVG becoming such quality antivirus solutions, only suckers and the under-informed are still paying for anti-virus.

I assume you're talking about Avast free?

Avast is an excellent product, but Panda does have a HIPS (TruPrevent). I would recommend you use Panda if you're willing to spend the money and do not use a separate HIPS.
