Install AVG free edition and Spybot-Search&Destroy. Both are freewares and compatible to each other. Just update their definitions and run a scan on your system. AVG scans for viruses and Spybot takes care of adwares, spywares and trojans and eliminates them using its secure shredder. Spybot also immunizes your system from further threats.In combination these freewares are much more effective in protection than many paid alternates.

along with avg and spybot, you require a good firewall also.  You can use Comodo firewall or Zonal Alarm firewall which are free and reliable.

If you want truly reliable, it will cost you (ESET NOD32)

If you want *decent* and free, give Avira from http://free-av.com a try.  AVG, by far the "most popular" free AV product, is almost always at the bottom of the "detection rate tests" (meaning it misses more viruses than most.)
